In any event, it's unlikely that you'll find a 5906 out in the wild that doesn't have a safety. I guess that's why they're called "accidents," after all. But it's understandable why some people think all guns should have them, especially if children are around.Īll of the safety precautions in the world can't guarantee that an accident won't happen. The need for them really all depends on the shooter. Nowadays, there is a wide-ranging argument over magazine safeties. If the criminal got the gun in their hands, they wouldn't be able to fire a shot. If a police officer were to get into a scuffle with a criminal and the criminal tried to take the police officer's 5906, the officer could quickly eject the magazine. The 5906 was designed this way for a very specific reason. This means that the handgun won't fire if the magazine is removed. The 5906 is equipped with a magazine safety, as are most of Smith & Wesson's metal-framed semi-automatic pistols. It originally came with a holster and a Sam Browne belt, adding to its overall appeal. I still own mine, which features Pachmyr grips, an extended mag release button, and a magazine cut-off, while I have disabled the spring/pin. Smith & Wesson produces a remarkable, durable, and perfectly fitted product. I have personally fired over 10,000 rounds through this pistol over the years, even acquiring an extended magazine that holds 40 rounds. However, it's not uncommon to encounter heavily worn 5906s, as these handguns often experienced significant use in their line of work. The front strap is equally well-designed, incorporating vertical grooves that provide additional assistance to your grip.įurthermore, the trigger guard is nicely undercut, enabling a higher grip on the pistol. Most later models were equipped with fixed Novak sights and round trigger guards.Īn interesting addition to these models is a textured trigger guard, featuring a checkered pattern along its face, making it easier and more comfortable to grip with your non-trigger hand. It really doesn't make much of a difference what version you end up with, as it all comes down to personal preference. The adjustable sight models are protected by large protrusions that stick out of the slide.Īs such, you are likely to see various versions of the 5906 in your quest to find one. They also had either fixed or adjustable Novak sights. I did call the PC about this that they explained it was due to twist rate of my 952 that preferred higher velocity ammo! Does PPC 5906 have the same barrel twist rate? I have tried Winchester 147 jhp subsonic like the ones in your video and unfortunately my grouping was not as good as either 124s or 115s, and the shots on target impact/location change significantly. Website: Contact: Smith & Wesson (S&W)! In 2007 upon retiring (LEO) I ordered a PPC 5906 from S&W, they were unable to fill order due to production limitations, instead I got a Model 952 essentially the same gun but in single stack version, beautiful gun with actually a better grip then PPC in my opinion? Extremely accurate, I’ve shot mainly CCI+124gr jhp Gold Dots, a friend of mine gave me a case of Federal +115 gr jhp I was concerned about running them through my 952! I called the S&W Performance Center (PC) they told me that what it was meant to shoot the 115 were great even better than 124, only slight elevation change on the rear sight.

I thank my friend, retired police officer Mike Z, for loaning me this gun for this review.ġ) All shooting was done by a trained professional on a dedicated shooting range Ģ) The firearm is totally stock – it is not a “previously modified” firearm ģ) This video is not an attempt to sell, or offer for sale, any firearm, accessory or ammunition Ĥ) All YouTube Community Standards and Guidelines have been followed to the letter ĥ) The link to the website below is to my personal website and I do not sell firearms, accessories or ammunition. This gun definitely can shoot better than I can. It was made in 5″ and 6″ barrel lengths and, with the right ammunition and in skilled hands, it was capable of consistently hitting the “X” ring on a B-27 target at 50 yards. The S&W Model 5906 PPC gun was made for a short time to compete in PPC (Police Pistol Combat, also known as Precision Pistol Competition) and was only sold to law enforcement officers who were PPC competitors. S&W 5906 PPC 6" 9mm – A rare but GREAT shooting gun.
